Who am I? According to the sheet of paper complete with gold seal, official sounding phrases, and tiny finger/foot prints; my name is Emily and I am eighteen years of age. My hair is, in fact, naturally curly. No perm--just bad luck. I was schooled at home through junior high and high school and will be attending Rhode Island School of Design in Fall 2009 to major in graphic design, and am a proud member of the cloistered, bubble-wrapped girls of America club. I am a neat freak who insists on keeping her closet organized by color, my socks rolled in pairs, and my days structured around a color-coded day planner.
I spent the last sixteen years of my life devoting three or more hours a day
to ballet class with my hair pulled back far too tight for my own good. Having grown up so incredibly active I find solace in trying out every other form of exercise I can. I have two gym memberships and love my kickboxing, Zumba, Power Step, and Boxing Basics classes more than I care to admit.
To keep up with all that activity I have to work very hard to nourish my little curly self properly. I am a vegetarian and aspiring vegan and try to eat as few processed foods as I can. I love to munch on mangoes, nut butters, oat bran and oatmeal, veggie burgers, cottage cheese, oranges, whole wheat pitas, and just about every vegetable known to man.
I took a year off after high school to focus on making some serious mula to place a dent in the upcoming $50,000 a year tuition that comes in the package deal of an Ivy League art school. To do so I sold my soul to Barnes and Noble and currently spend 20plus hours a week making frappuccinos in the Starbucks cafe and dusting the same book display multiple times in a single shift. Staff members are permitted to check out any book in the store for two weeks, and I took this as an invitation to absorb the genius of literature at my own pace, on my own terms, and without having to spend a single cent. While the first month was, admittedly, an orgy of every obscure work of Conrad, Lewis, and Dostoevsky I could lay my hands on, I also love to sit down with a whole pile of vegan cookbooks or the latest Self magazine.
I spend my “abundant” free time fiddling with Photoshop, Illustrator, and Indesign on my beloved laptop, Ping; finishing up homework for the two art classes I am currently taking at the local jr. college: Intro to Painting and Figure Drawing; coveting every item in Anthropolgie; or visiting one of the six libraries to which I have donated my life savings in late book fees.
Au revoir my dears- it was so nice to have met you!
With Love,
Emily

Emily, I think we are soul mates!
I was also a competitive (and passionate) dancer from the age of three. I love literature, design, art, barnes and noble, vegetarian, recovery, and so much more galore.
But I love your story, poise, and humor.
And remember...''To accomplish great things, we must not only act, but also dream; not only plan, but also believe.''

Hello!!
I don't really remember the long lists of blogs that it took for me to stumble upon yours, however, I love your writing style, I work at a cafe, and I live in RI (my therapist is RIGHT next to Brown)! So I just thought I would send you a hello!!

hello!
we have similar stories, only i am sixteen years old and an avid pianist who is itching to become independent. i've gone through a period of disordered eating (i don't know what to classify it as but something was up) for a couple months this past summer and am still recovering mentally/emotionally
oh, and we both are blessed to have really super-cool ringlets on our heads. only mine are down to the small of my back and i don't know what color they are:}
i came across your website from, well, i think it was nutritiousjunk.com? one of those types of websites >.<
anyway, i just wanted to tell you that you've inspired me to blog like you do:) since telling someone about my day is a huge release for me, i thought i would take your approach and do it via computer, which is what i'm planted in front of all the time in the first place.
i love your pizazz and the way you say things. it's a cool outlook! i'm glad you're taking care of yourself and trying new things as much as you can. keep it up!

Thanks for the comment Emily! Us curly gals need to stick together...here's a question I ask every girl I meet with curly hair: what products do you use on your hair!
We need to swap secrets!
Youz a DIVA! LOVE YOUR LOCKS! And your story is amazing..my friend would be SO jealous if she heard you are doing the duel program at RISD. It was her dream!
I also LOVE graphic design and hope to do it when I'm older at some bossy business!
Oh yes, and ANTHRO = LIFE
Hi Emily,
Thanks for visiting my site and introducing yourself! Of course I figured it was only polite to check out your site as well :) I love that you are a curly top too! Although your curls seem far more manageable than mine.
I read through a couple of posts and I already know I'll love visiting your site on a regular basis.
It is great 'meeting' you as well!
xoxo,
Alex
Oh and I'm with Healthy Everythingtarian on swapping hair product secrets ;)
I love your story! I too am (was I guess) a ballet dancer. I started with ballet, jazz, tap and gymnastics when I was about 8, along with hip hop and modern as I got older. I was on the dance team in high school and college and the dance program. I love dance! While I don't do it as much anymore (a few classes here and there), I miss it terribly, but I guess the real world has finally caught up with me! I used to do ballet about 2.5 hours/day 5-6 days/week. I am now getting more into athlete-type stuff I guess you could call it and am going for my masters in exercise physiology/sports nutrition. I'd like to do a 1/2 tri someday :) I love all your pictures of dance! How lucky are you to check out all those books, I would just get lost in all the cookbooks!! I am so looking forward to reading your blog :) Thank you!

Hi Emily!
Your blog is absolutely adorable - I can't wait to start spending more time here. I so admire your vegetarian / natural diet, and I'm sure all of your lovely photos will be quite the inspiration.
I'm always excited to help someone in the journey of running - since I'm still so new to it myself, I can completely remember the difficulties of starting out. For me, finding a plan was key, which looks like it would fit well with you too. Schedule it in, and color it pretty colors. If you don't have a plan, I can recommend!
I also like to register for a plenty of fun races along the way. This way I knew that I had to keep going and had things to look forward to rather than 'just another run.'
The blogging community is my #1 support group - these girlies are amazing!
and I've always longed for cute little blonde curls...
WOW I genuinely envy your drive and vision. My time is ticking and I still have no idea as to where I'm attending college or even what my calling is in life. And although many people say you can't go finding your niche, it will come to you...well time's a wasting niche! So, kudos to you for your passion and natural superhuman talent!
I've been dancing (nowhere near your caliber) since I was 8. Unprofessionally though, I always feel like I have my parents to blame for that one. I loved it, it felt good on the body and I was conscious of this at that age. But now I'm in my school's advanced dance class, or as I'd like to think of as the "indie dancers". Once you're on team you lose your sense of personal dancing style because you gotta be uniform like everyone else on your team. Then there's advanced class containing the people that got their own thing going for them...in the good way of course. There's this one aerial, contemporary mastermind. And a hiphop connoisseur. Just alot of flavor in that class!
ANYWHO, I'm rambling, you look like a swan in your balletic photos, your fitness life looks absolutely entertaining, and I'm glad to have met you :)
I love your energy and bubbly personality that comes across in your posts!
I will be trying PBU and doing my part to put you down in history books! .ie adding you to my blogroll.
I just stumbled across your blog through another and I have to ask...what hair products do you use???
Your hair is adorable! I have curly hair as well and cannot seem to tame the frizz without my hair feeling either crunchy or weighed down :-(
I am 10 years older than you, but I danced ballet for 12 years. I have always loved the art! My passion however is acting, I wish you luck on your journey!!! Love the blog :-)
Hi Emily! I just found your blog after hearing so much about PBU and wanting to get to the source! Great idea and a great blog you have here. Can't wait to read more :)
Hi Emily, I love your blog and I think your artwork is the cutest! However after reading some of your "day of eats" I am concerned that you are not eating enough.. veggies and a sweet potato for dinner? luna bar for lunch? Measuring out your nut butter?? Seems a little extreme especially for a girl who exercises as much as you!!
I want to know about hair products too. My curly hair always gets so frizzy.
your blog is wonderful, and so are you!!! so happy to have met you too, my dear :)
You are a very inspiring and beautiful person! Love your blog
i go to RISD and i'm alo vegan. i'm a freshman going into illustrationi or apparel. I also did ballet pretty intensively before i got here. haven't had time to , let alone dance, since-foundation year is like boot camp.
