War of the Veggie Burgers: Boca vs. Morningstar

I'll take one burger de-calf please!

That may be my most favoritist way to order one of the most widely available veggie protein sources around. It always takes the waiter a moment to catch on. ;P

I love eating veggie burgers at home as well. They make for an easy, no-mess protein exchange any time I don't feel like whipping up something of my own.

As I mention in the video, I used to be a big fan of Boca. No more! They are FAR to processed for this little personage's taste. I find the Morningstar garden veggie patties to be about 100 times more palatable.

Contrast and compare the two ingredient lists:

Morningstar-VEGETABLES (MUSHROOMS, WATER CHESTNUTS, ONIONS, CARROTS, GREEN BELL PEPPERS, RED BELL PEPPERS, BLACK OLIVES), TEXTURED VEGETABLE PROTEIN (SOY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, WHEAT GLUTEN, WATER FOR HYDRATION), EGG WHITES, COOKED BROWN RICE (WATER, BROWN RICE), ROLLED OATS, CORN OIL, CALCIUM CASEINATE, SOY SAUCE (WATER, SOYBEANS, SALT, WHEAT), CONTAINS TWO PERCENT OR LESS OF ONION POWDER, CORNSTARCH, SALT, HYDROLYZED VEGETABLE PROTEIN (CORN, SOY AND WHEAT), AUTOLYZED YEAST EXTRACT, NATURAL FLAVORS FROM NON-MEAT SOURCES, SUGAR, SOY PROTEIN ISOLATE, SPICES, GARLIC POWDER, DEXTROSE, JALAPEÑO PEPPER POWDER, CELERY EXTRACT.

vs.

Boca-WATER, ENRICHED TEXTURED SOY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE PRODUCT (CONTAINS SOY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, CARAMEL COLOR, FERROUS SULFATE [IRON], NIACINAMIDE, ZINC OXIDE, CALCIUM PANTOTHENATE, THIAMIN MONONITRATE [VITAMIN B1], PYRIDOXINE HYDROCHLORIDE [VITAMIN B6], RIBOFLAVIN [VITAMIN B2], FOLIC ACID, CYANOCOBALAMIN [VITAMIN B12]), WHEAT GLUTEN, SOY PROTEIN CONCENTRATE, CONTAINS LESS THAN 2% OF METHYLCELLULOSE, SALT, DRIED ONIONS, NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR (NON-MEAT), YEAST EXTRACT, SESAME OIL, HYDROLYZED WHEAT PROTEIN, DISODIUM GUANYLATE, DISODIUM INOSINATE.

I don't know about you, but I don't fancy anything (with the exception of my nemesis, diet crack) with added caramel color. I will take the extra ten calories in the Morningstar burger if it means I don't have to digest a food that needed chemical help to look "flame grilled"!

Not to mention the enormous taste difference! Boca tastes like meat. Morningstar tastes like peas and carrots and bell peppers. I am a vegetarian because animal products gross me out. I love my veggies. Which do you think I prefer?

I also tried the Dr. Praeger's brand veggie burger (reviewed here). Not a fan, my friends, not a fan! Who likes greasy veggie mush? Not moi!

Despite my great love for Morningstar, I'm trying to cut back because of the whole soy controversy .

What are your thoughts on the soy issue? Any soy-free veggie burger recommendations?

With Love,

Emily

BTW- The hair appointment went smashing! As soon as I get a chance to make myself presentable and vainly snap a few self portraits, I'll post them.

Sunshine Burgers! I tried one the other day...perfection.

Plus, the ingredients list is super short...unlike those soy burgers!

I definitely prefer the morningstar burgers over boca too. I am pretty sure Amy's makes a soy-free veggie burger but I have never tried it.

I am glad the hair appointment went well! Cant wait to see a pic!

I love your comparison of the veggie burgers! I usually prefer Boca but they recently ticked me off because their new mushroom burgers contain trans fat! I do like the veggie taste of Morningstar but I'm like you with this whole soy thing I'm not sure which to eat anymore. I think I might start making my own at home with beans and veggies but that will take more time. Hmmm...great post!

You should just try making your own. They're easy, cost effective and taste loads better than any packaged kind!

I use Bittman's black bean burger as a starter, but you can use almost any beans and it tastes great: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9D04E4D6123EF936A25751C0A9609C8B63

Ohhhh good comparison!

I am going to go with Shelby too - the sunshine burgers are fab!

Have a wonderful day dear~

FYI, you can also precook them a bit and freeze for later use for less prep time the next time you want a veggie burger.

I haven't bought Boca in forever! I prefer the Spicy Black Bean burger from Morningstar and Amy's Bistro Burger (although lower in protein). I've seen so many other brands and flavors I would like to try though.

I like veggie burgers too - but I usually just make my own. I've never bought the packaged stuff before. But the Morningstar definately look better than the Boca.

I really want to see you gorgeous hair girl! Get that camera out soon!

This is great! I've been meaning to buy some veggie burgers for a quick dinner fix, but didn't know where to start in terms of brands (there's so many lately!). So this was a great introduction for me!

Can't wait to see your new hair!

Back when I still ate meat I preferred a grilled veggie burger over the grossly juicy meat kind. The one beef (haha) I have with Morningstar burgers is that they aren't vegan. While they don't taste quite as delicious, I go for Gardenburger's vegan patties. They're usually cheaper and less caloric than Amy's, but just a little less tasty.

I'm also trying to eat less soy as it makes my tummy slightly unhappy. Do you have a favorite recipe for your own veggie burgers that you'd be willing to share?

I haven't tried either of those brands so thanks for the review! To be honest, I have no idea where I stand on the soy issue. I'm in the "everything in moderation" boat so as long as I don't have soy with every meal, I think I'll be okay.

Can't wait to see your new do!

I just prefer to make my own veggie burgers! so much cleaner that way, and it really doesn't take much time or prep!

I've never had a veggie burger, but would love to try the morningstar ones. The ingredient list alone is WAY better. Water as the first ingredient? Umm, that's kinda weird in my opinion. By the way, girl, you're beautiful!

I too prefer the morning star over the boca. Like you said, the ingredients are a little more natural and the taste is just so much better.
I haven't tried the Amys burger yet... maybe i'll try that one tomorrow :)

cute video emily !!!

ive never tried a morningstar product - but i unfortunately have tried the vegan boca burger (so icky).

my favorite burgers? sunshine garden herb. they are as natural as they come - about 5 ingredients total. they are soy free, dairy free, and gluten free! and taste wise they are amazing - nutty and veggie flavored, not meaty. my second favorites are amy's bistro burger and amy's california burger (only this flavor is soy free). but they are both excellent!

im also against soy. i have been for about 4 months now, as i found out i have a mild food allergy due to my thyroid (which can be brought on by eds!) it all is very much connected. so it is definitely something to limit! about 1 serving of soy per day, at most.

i hope you had a wonderful friday!

love, brooke <3

I've never tried the Morningstar burgers. I used to eat the Boca ones all the time too, especially after we bought a huge box of them from Sam's. Let's just say I never want to see another Boca burger in my life.
I did a review of my favorite burgers a while back called "Burger Bliss" if you're interested.

PS Have I ever told you how much I love your cake plate?
